Freedom House and the Center for Religious Freedom Announce Separation

Washington, D.C.
December 28, 2006

The Center for Religious Freedom, which for the past ten years has functioned as a part of Freedom House, will move to the Hudson Institute on December 31, 2006.  At a meeting of the Freedom House Board of Trustees in New York City on October 26, a formal resolution was adopted clearing the way for the transfer of assets and liabilities.

Freedom House and the Center have worked closely together over the past decade to advance the cause of religious freedom in parts of the world where it is under threat.

“In its partnership with Freedom House, the Center for Religious Freedom has made tremendous strides in drawing attention to religious persecution,” said Nina Shea, Director of the Center for Religious Freedom. “It has been an honor and a privilege to have worked with Freedom House. Freedom House has an extraordinary history of leadership on behalf of freedom, including religious liberty, around the world,” Shea stated.

“We wish the Center well in its new location, and also look forward to cooperation on a range of issues,” said Freedom House executive director Jennifer Windsor. “Freedom House will continue to speak out forcefully and frequently on matters of religious freedom,” she noted. “Freedom of religion is a key component of our concept of freedom.”

The annual survey of political rights and civil liberties produced by Freedom House, Freedom in the World, considers whether there is freedom of religious expression in a country in its assessment of the state of civil liberties.
