Freedom House strongly condemns the illegal imprisonment in exile of Farshid Yadollahi and Reza Entesari, two Sufi Dervishes and prisoners of conscience.  Additionally, Iranian authorities must stop preventing Iranian Sufi Dervishes and prisoners of conscience from access to adequate medical care.

In many countries, political leaders take full advantage of social media platforms even as ordinary citizens face criminal prosecution for their own online activities.

Freedom House condemns Iran’s execution on January 27 of renowned Iranian poet Hashem Shaabani. In July 2013, an Islamic Revolutionary Tribunal had sentenced the poet to death, along with 14 others, on charges of  “waging war on God,” “spreading corruption on earth,” and “questioning the principle of velayat-e faqih” (the rule of the jurisprudent, Iran’s system of vesting supreme power in an unelected cleric), according to press reports.

Internet censorship poses a large and growing challenge to online freedom of expression around the world. Censorship circumvention tools are critical to bypass restrictions on the internet and thereby to protect free expression online.
 
This document provides a comparison among different circumvention tools, both in terms of their technical merits, as well as how users of these tools describe their experience with them. The countries included in this report are Azerbaijan, Burma, China and Iran.
