His Excellency Toomas Ilves
President of the Republic of Estonia
Toomas Hendrik Ilves is the current President of the Republic of Estonia. Born in Sweden to Estonian refugee parents, President Ilves grew up and received his education in the U.S. After a career in education and journalism, he entered public service in 1993 when he became the Ambassador of Estonia to the United States, Canada and Mexico. He subsequently served as Estonia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, was the leader of the Social Democratic Party, held a seat in the Estonian Parliament, and was elected a Member of the European Parliament. He was elected the fourth President of the Republic of Estonia in 2006.
