UN Human Rights Council, 15th Session Agenda Item 3: Promotion and protection of all human rights, civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights, including the right to development, September 16, 2010
On August 16, 2010, the anti-TIP (Trafficking In Persons) network, which Freedom House assisted in creating as part of its “Actions to Combat Human Trafficking in Guatemala” project, held a press conference with representatives from all 18 member organizations to urge the national government to fully employ the existing legal framework for prosecution of trafficking crimes and protection of victims by providing adequate funding and resources to the Ministry of Sexual Violence, Exploitation and Trafficking (SVET).
As part of its ongoing effort to support human rights activists across Sub Saharan Africa in their struggle for the defense and promotion of human rights and basic freedoms, Freedom House sponsored and facilitated the first strategic meeting of the newly formed Central African Human Rights Defenders Network (REDHAC) in July 2010.
Freedom House recently helped to organize a briefing on the human rights situation in Chechnya, hosted by the Commission for Security and Cooperation in Europe, entitled “In the Eye of the Storm: Chechnya and the Mounting Violence in the North Caucasus.”
Freedom House was recently featured on an episode of PBS show “Ideas into Action.” The program focused on the ways in which human rights advocates and political activists are able to use the Internet to communicate their ideas with one another and with others around the world, and the challenges they face from repressive regimes like China and Iran.
