Aleppo: Urgent Need to Respect Civilian Lives

Washington

In response to civilian casualties and suffering in the besieged Syrian city of Aleppo, Freedom House issued the following statement:

“The death toll among civilians in Aleppo in this unrelenting siege makes it imperative that all warring parties immediately stop targeting noncombatants and take serious steps to avoid civilian casualties,” said Daniel Calingaert, acting president. “The United Nations Security Council should formally ask the International Criminal Court to investigate and prosecute actions by the Syrian government. With or without Security Council action, the world’s democracies should raise their voices about the human rights catastrophe taking place at this hour, insist on respect for the fundamental right to life, and demand an end to this shameful degradation of basic human values.”

Syria is rated Not Free in Freedom in the World 2016, Not Free in Freedom of the Press 2016, and Not Free in Freedom on the Net 2016
