Anniversary of Estemirova’s Death Should Be Impetus for Investigation

Washington

Marking the fifth anniversary of the murder of Natalya Estemirova, a prominent human rights defender from the Memorial Human Rights Center, Freedom House issued the following statement:

“Freedom House continues to mourn the death of Natalya Estemirova, a dedicated and courageous human rights defender, whose life was tragically cut short because of her efforts to reveal human rights abuses in Chechnya,” said David J. Kramer, president of Freedom House. “Russian authorities have had half a decade to conduct a legitimate investigation of Estemirova’s murder. Instead, they have dragged their feet and pushed forward a version of events that is obviously fabricated, shielding her killers from justice and effectively validating their actions. Just as with the infamous murder case of Estemirova’s esteemed colleague, journalist Anna Politkovskaya, the Russian government has made clear that it has no interest in ending the climate of impunity for those who attack government critics. Freedom House renews its call for an objective, thorough and transparent investigation of Estemirova’s murder and an end to the violence against Russia’s critics of human rights violations.

Natalya Estemirova was kidnapped in the Chechen capital of Grozny on July 15, 2009, and was found shot to death later the same day in the nearby Republic of Ingushetia. No one has been held accountable for her murder.
