Chad: Tensions Rise before Sunday Presidential Vote

In advance of Chad’s April 10 presidential elections, which may extend President Idriss Deby’s 26 years in power, Freedom House issued the following statement:

"Freedom House condemns the Chadian government’s arrest of five civil society leaders, its use of excessive force against peaceful protestors, and the public prosecutor calling for critics of the government to be punished,” said Vukasin Petrovic, director for Africa programs. "This intense government intimidation violates the fundamental right to peacefully protest and freely express opinions — rights that must be respected if elections are to have any meaning.”

Chad is rated Not Free in Freedom in the World 2016 and Not Free in Freedom of the Press 2015
