Crimean “Self-Defense” Forces Kidnap and Beat Journalists under Russia’s Watchful Eye

Washington

Following the escalation of attacks journalists in Ukraine, including the detention and beating of two journalists in Crimea, Freedom House issued the following statement:

“The assault on the media in Ukraine, especially in eastern regions and Crimea, continues unabated, with frightening attacks on and kidnappings of journalists,” said David Kramer, president of Freedom House. “Sergey Mokrushin and Vladlen Melnikov, two staff members of the Center for Investigative Reporting, were detained and brutally beaten on June 2 in the presence of local Crimean leaders and then in the presence of Russian police officers. This is a clear effort to silence investigative journalists by local ‘self-defense’ forces with the occupying Russian authorities’ approval. These crimes should be thoroughly investigated.  Journalists must be able to safely and independently report on developments wherever they might be. This underscores even more the terrible damage Vladimir Putin has caused in Ukraine through his invasion and annexation of Crimea and his efforts to destabilize the east and south.

Ukraine is rated Partly Free in Freedom in the World 2014, Not Free in Freedom of the Press 2014, and Free in Freedom on the Net 2013.
