Cuba Targets Domestic Critics with Harassment, Arrest

In response to Cuban authorities detaining the journalist Reinaldo Escobar and stationing police outside the home of political dissidents, Freedom House issued the following statement:

“Cuba’s detention of Reinaldo Escobar and the harassment of government critics are reminders that the United State’s resumption of diplomatic relations will not automatically improve Cuba’s dismal human rights record,” said Robert Herman, vice president for regional programs. “Cubans should be free to express their views and do so without fear of arrest. We urge the United States to put democracy and respect for human rights front and center in its new diplomatic relationship with Cuba."

Cuba is rated Not Free in Freedom in the World 2014, Not Free in Freedom of the Press 2014 and Not Free in Freedom on the Net 2014.
