Denying Entry to Refugees Undermines Democratic Values

In response to President Trump’s executive order barring the arrival of refugees and all other citizens from seven predominantly Muslim countries, Freedom House issued the following statement:

“Closing the door to people seeking safety from conflict, or on the basis of their religion, does not make the United States safer,” said Daniel Calingaert, acting president. “While elected officials have a duty to protect the nation’s security, they must also defend its values, including its guarantee of freedom of religion and its protections against discrimination. The executive order endangers the already perilous lives of refugees, and the standing of the United States as a nation that protects those most in need of safety. Those seeking admittance to the United States as refugees already go through a robust screening process.”
