July 1, 2016
Following the United Nations Human Rights Council’s passage of a resolution appointing an independent expert on sexual orientation and gender identity, Freedom House issued the following statement:
“The Human Rights Council’s landmark decision to create a position monitoring violence against LGBTI individuals is a welcome step in the protection of human rights for LGBTI persons,” said Daniel Calingaert, executive vice president. “Attacks against LGBTI persons have been on the rise in many places around the world, and the UN’s independent investigator will play a crucial role in counteracting these attacks. It is vital for the international community to band together to protect the fundamental rights of all people.”
