Freedom House Applauds EU’s Appointment of New Human Rights Envoy
July 27, 2012
Freedom House welcomes the appointment of Stavros Lambrinidis as the European Union’s first Special Representative for Human Rights (EUSR) on July 25.
The new Special Representative’s mandate will include strengthening democracy, international standards of due process, freedom of expression, the abolition of the death penalty, and improving gender equality and children’s rights.
“The decision to name an experienced, high-level diplomat to this new position signals a serious commitment to raise the priority of human rights in EU foreign,” said Daniel Calingaert, vice president of policy at Freedom House. “Mr. Lambrinidis will need the full support of EU institutions to carry out his mandate effectively.”
