Freedom House Calls for Investigation of Latest Attack on Russian Human Rights Activist

Washington

Freedom House expresses deep concern over the latest attack on a Russian human rights activist, this time against Bakhrom Khamroyev outside his home in Moscow. Freedom House calls for a full and transparent investigation so that the perpetrators are held accountable – in this and in all other instances where activists have been attacked.

Khamroyev works for the respected Russian human rights group Memorial. Unfortunately, this is not the first time he has been attacked, nor is his case unique in Russia. It is important that human rights defenders are free to operate in an environment where they are safe to conduct their work.

“I have been impressed for many years by the good work that Memorial has done in Russia and am troubled to hear about this recent attack,” said Susan Corke, senior program manager for Eurasia at Freedom House. “It is important that brave people such as Bakhrom Khamroyev, who are working to protect the rights of Russian citizens, are safe to do their good work and that those who commit these crimes are investigated and held accountable.”

David J. Kramer, executive director at Freedom House added, “This is just the latest attack we’ve seen in Russia against human rights defenders, critics, and activists.  In the absence of real accountability and rule of law in Russia, such attacks, sadly, are likely to continue.”

2011 has already been a dangerous year in Russia: there have been more than three dozen human rights activists and journalists attacked and three who have been killed. The brave activists working to defend Khimki forest have faced an escalation in the violent crackdown against them, with several beaten and many more detained in the past month alone.

Russia is rated Not Free in Freedom in the World 2011, Freedom House’s survey of political rights and civil liberties.
