Freedom House Calls for Release of Imprisoned Azerbaijani Journalist
October 21, 2010
Freedom House joins nine other human rights organizations in calling on Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev to release journalist Eynulla Fatullayev. In April, the European Court ruled that Fatullayev’s imprisonment constituted a violation of his freedom of expression and right to a fair trial and ordered the Azerbaijani government to free him and compensate him for damages and legal expenses. Fatullayev remains incarcerated and now stands accused of a drug-possession charge that international observers find suspicious.
Freedom House is an independent watchdog organization that supports democratic change, monitors the status of freedom around the world, and advocates for democracy and human rights.
