Freedom House Condemns Attack on Russian Activist

Freedom House condemns the attack on Philip Kostenko, an activist working with the Anti-Discrimination Center “Memorial” in Saint Petersburg, Russia, who has been involved in recent demonstrations advocating for fair elections in Russia. Kostenko was attacked on Friday, February 3 in a park by two men who reportedly targeted him specifically. Freedom House is deeply troubled by the attack and calls for a thorough investigation. Freedom House also calls on authorities to ensure the safety of all activists exercising their constitutional freedoms, especially during the period leading up to Russia’s March 4 presidential election.
