Freedom House Endorses U.S. Plan to Alter Administration of Internet

Washington

Ahead of today's Congressional hearing on "Ensuring the Security, Stability, Resilience, and Freedom of the Global Internet," Freedom House and a coalition of human rights organizations and public interest groups wrote Congress in support of the U.S. plan to transition key internet domain name functions to a global body pledged to preserve a free, open, and secure internet.

"The idea to transition the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority functions isn't a new one, but the timing of the announcement helps protect the openness of the internet,” said Gigi Alford, senior program officer for internet freedom at Freedom House. “This is a welcome step forward for defending global free expression online, but human rights groups should remain vigilant.”
