Freedom House Names Kenneth I. Juster as New Chair of Board of Trustees
Freedom House is pleased to announce the election of Kenneth I. Juster as the new Chair of its Board of Trustees. Juster succeeds William H. Taft, IV, who served as Chair from 2008-2013.
"Ken Juster has been a valued and active member of the Freedom House Board since 2009," said David Kramer, president of Freedom House. "He has great personal integrity and character, a wealth of knowledge and experience relative to the mission of Freedom House, and a proven track record of leadership on our issues and others. He has constantly demonstrated his commitment to the crucial work of Freedom House by traveling to the field with staff, generously contributing his time and resources, and assuming leadership roles within Board committees. After five years of Will Taft's outstanding leadership as Chair, Ken has big shoes to fill, but I'm confident that he will do an excellent job. The Freedom House Board and staff look forward to working with him in advancing the organization's goals."
Juster is a Managing Director at Warburg Pincus LLC. His career has spanned law, government, business, and international affairs. He previously served as Under Secretary of Commerce; Counselor (Acting) of the Department of State; and Deputy and Senior Adviser to then-Deputy Secretary of State Lawrence S. Eagleburger. Among his responsibilities in those positions was overseeing assistance programs (including the promotion of democracy, rule of law, and market economies) to Central and Eastern Europe after the fall of the Berlin Wall. He was also deeply involved in overseeing assistance to the Newly Independent States of the former Soviet Union.
In the private sector, Juster has been a senior executive at a software company and practiced law at the firm Arnold & Porter as a senior partner. In this latter capacity, he served as outside counsel to the National Endowment for Democracy and on the Advisory Board of the American Bar Association's Central and Eastern European Legal Initiative. Juster is also Chair of the Advisory Committee of Harvard's Weatherhead Center for International Affairs and a member of the Trilateral Commission, the Council on Foreign Relations, and the American Academy of Diplomacy.
"I am honored to be selected to Chair the Board of Trustees of an organization as significant as Freedom House," Juster said. "Our mission of supporting democratic change and advocating for human rights is more critical than ever in today's world. I look forward to collaborating with an outstanding Board and dedicated staff in advancing Freedom House's work."
