Freedom House Sends Letter to Secretary of State Clinton Urging US Response to Malaysia Crackdown
July 15, 2011
Freedom House, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and the Physicians For Human Rights expressed concern regarding the brutal crackdown against protesters in Malaysia in a letter sent to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Hundreds were arrested and beaten at the July 9 “Walk for Democracy” rally in Kuala Lumpur organized by the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih 2.0). In the letter, the group urges the U.S. government to send a strong public message to the Malaysian government that any restriction on the right to peaceful assembly is inconsistent with democratic principles.
