Freedom House Welcomes New Director of Kazakhstan Office

Washington

Freedom House is pleased to announce that Viktoria Tyuleneva has joined Freedom House as the director of its Kazakhstan field office. As country director, Tyuleneva will lead Freedom House’s USAID project “Kazakhstan’s Strengthened Respect for Human Rights,” which supports civil society efforts to promote human rights through cooperation with the government of Kazakhstan, and human rights training for youth around the country.

“We believe that Viktoria Tyuleneva is the right person to lead Freedom House’s Kazakhstan office at this critical time. Civil society in Kazakhstan has faced numerous obstacles and Viktoria has the drive, the intelligence,  and the passion to help sustain the resilience of key human rights organizations and bring in new civic actors,” said Susan Corke, director of Eurasia programs at Freedom House.

Tyuleneva is a human rights defender with more than decade of experience advocating for human rights in Kazakhstan and Central Asia. She studied international law at Almaty State University and human rights law in the Helsinki Foundation’s Higher Course on Human Rights in Warsaw, Poland. For the past 12 years, she has worked at the respected Kazakhstan International Bureau for Human Rights and Rule of Law (KIBHR), rising to the position of Deputy Director for Strategy Development. Freedom House welcomes Viktoria into her new position.
