Freedom House Welcomes New Head of Eurasia Programs

Washington

Freedom House is pleased to announce that Susan Corke has joined the organization as the new head of its Eurasia programs.

“Susan brings to Freedom House a wealth of substantive expertise, program management experience, and a steadfast commitment to advancing democracy and human rights across the states of the former Soviet Union, a region that remains one of the world’s most repressive,” said Freedom House executive director, David J. Kramer. “Indeed, Susan is the perfect person to help Freedom House address the challenges that remain in Eurasia on issues of human rights and democracy.”

Corke is a respected expert on the region and a skilled practitioner in supporting human rights and democratic reform. Before joining Freedom House, she spent seven years at the State Department, most recently as the Deputy Director for European Affairs in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor, where she worked to promote human rights and democratic reform. She also did stints in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, the Bureau of Public Affairs, U.S. Embassy Prague, and U.S. Embassy Moscow. Prior to the State Department, Corke helped found and manage the U.S. Foreign Policy Institute at the Elliott School of International of Affairs at George Washington University.   She has also worked at the German Marshall Fund and as a media strategist at several advertising agencies in New York. Corke has a Master’s degree in International Affairs from George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs and a Bachelor’s degree from the College of William & Mary.

“I’m excited to continue my work advancing freedom in the corners of Europe and Eurasia where authoritarian rule continues to prevent citizens from exercising their fundamental rights,” Corke said.  “I’m particularly pleased to be joining Freedom House, an organization which has been at the forefront of supporting the expansion of freedom for nearly 70 years. While at the State Department I came to respect the work of the talented professionals at Freedom House and am delighted to be joining them now in common cause to help catalyze  freedom, democracy and the rule of law.”
