Freedom in the World 2013 Finds Democracy Declined for Seventh Straight Year

Findings from Freedom in the World 2013, Freedom House's annual report on the state of global freedom, reveal that democracy declined worldwide for the seventh straight year in 2012. Despite this decline, Freedom House Director of Research Arch Puddington noted at the Freedom in the World 2013 launch that “the major message of the year is one of potential and opportunity.” Puddington was joined by Stanford University Professor Larry Diamond and Director of the Saban Center for Middle East Policy Tamara Wittes in a discussion moderated by CNN Foreign Affairs Correspondent Jill Dougherty.

“Freedom House scores are a great tool to remind us of what’s yet to be done,” stated Wittes, who argued that the U.S. must use “pressure and incentives” on countries to move in a more democratic direction.
