Following House and Senate passage of legislation to fund the government through September 30, 2016, Freedom House issued the following statement:
“I commend Congress for including in the omnibus funding bill strong protections for democracy and human rights," said Daniel Calingaert, executive vice president. “In past years, funding for these programs was raided to pay for other priorities. Congress has taken the important step of ensuring that democracy, human rights and governance (DRG) funds cannot be siphoned, and has sent a strong message that people everywhere have an inherent right to live in free societies governed by rule of law. Programs to promote human rights and good governance around the world are crucial, cost-effective tools that not only improve the lives of millions but also advance America’s economic and security interests.”
