On the eve of President Yaya Jammeh’s term ending in The Gambia, Freedom House issued the following statement:

“President Jammeh should immediately agree to peacefully leave office to his duly elected successor, Adama Barrow, and pledge to a peaceful transition to the new administration,” said Vukasin Petrovic, director of Central, East, West and Horn of Africa programs. “By holding onto power, Jammeh is denying the Gambia its democratic potential and disrespecting the will of the people.”
