In response to Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez announcing plans to create a ministry of human rights responsible for protecting freedom of expression and other fundamental rights, Freedom House released the following statement:
“The government of Honduras should be congratulated for creating a ministry of human rights, which could build confidence between government and civil society, and between government and journalists,” said Carlos Ponce, director of Latin America programs. “If the ministry fulfills its mandate, it will help reduce violence and abuses, and strengthen greater respect throughout the country for human rights.”
