Honduras: International Experts Should Oversee Presidential Recount
To avoid further violence in Honduras, the Organization of American States and the European Union should oversee a recount and verification of all ballots.
In response to international election monitors citing irregularities in the counting of votes in Honduras’ general election, and monitors’ challenge of the exceptionally narrow margin of victory claimed by President Juan Orlando Hernández, Freedom House issued the following statement:
“To avoid further violence, the Organization of American States and the European Union should oversee a recount and verification of all ballots by an independent committee of international experts,” said Carlos Ponce, director of Latin America programs at Freedom House. “Election monitors found such significant irregularities in the count that authorities halted the vote reporting without explanation for more than 24 hours. A recount and an independent verification is necessary in order to restore both stability and trust in the democratic process.”
