Hong Kong Demonstrators Seeking Fundamental Rights

Washington

As pro-democracy demonstrators in Hong Kong gathered outside government buildings to demand genuinely free elections, Freedom House issued the following statement:

“The mass protests in Hong Kong should be a reminder to China’s leaders there and in Beijing that citizens will always seek their fundamental political rights and civil liberties,” said David J. Kramer, president of Freedom House. “Using force to end the demonstrations will fail to end the demands for truly free, open elections and for freedom of speech. We urge the authorities to meet the public’s demand for fair elections.”

Hong Kong is rated Partly Free in both Freedom in the World 2014 and Freedom of the Press 2014.
