International Consortium Launches NGO Assistance Fund

Vilnius

Freedom House today announces the launch of an international consortium to support non-governmental organizations under threat around the world. The Embattled NGO Assistance Fund will help civil society activists withstand crackdowns and pressure, enabling them to continue their work to defend citizens’ rights and freedoms.

“In many countries, civil society activists are being jailed, harassed, or targeted with increasing frequency, and their organizations are being threatened, if not shut down,” said David J. Kramer, president of Freedom House. “The NGO Fund creates a global network to give assistance to civil society organizations when they need it most and to speak out on their behalf.”

Groups defending the rights of fellow citizens face constant pressure, including threats of physical harm, from governments and non-state actors. Recent examples include a draft law in Cambodia to increase government control over NGOs, government freezes on NGO bank accounts in Ethiopia, coordinated attacks against and restrictions on the movement of opposition members in Iran, and the violent dispersal of demonstrations in Belarus.

The Embattled NGO Assistance Fund will be managed by an international consortium that includes Freedom House, the International Center for Not-for-Profit Law (United States), FrontLine Defenders (Ireland), CIVICUS World Alliance for Citizen Participation (South Africa), the Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development (Thailand), People in Need (Czech Republic), and the Swedish International Liberal Center.  Thirteen governments, including Australia, Benin, Canada, Chile, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States, have pledged support for this NGO Assistance Fund.

The NGO Assistance Fund will bring together leading civil society organizations to create a global network to defend embattled NGOs.  Freedom House and the consortium will work with hundreds of groups on the ground to speak out against attacks and to quickly provide emergency legal, humanitarian, medical, and security support to those at risk in every area of the world.
