Some 1,500 Jordanians attended the launch of the Gender Equality Movement (GEM) in Amman’s Al Hussein Park April 25. The day-long festival featured bands, women selling items they created with microcredit loans and booths that highlighted the work of 20 Jordanian civil society organizations. GEM is a grassroots movement led by Jordanian youth that seeks to spark discussion on gender equality and educate the public about women’s rights. The movement is supported by Freedom House's TAWASOL program, which engages local civil society in promoting women's rights in Jordan.
Freedom House is an independent watchdog organization that supports democratic change, monitors the status of freedom around the world, and advocates for democracy and human rights.
