Journalist killed in Brazil

Freedom House condemns the killing of Paulo Roberto Cardoso Rodrigues, the editor for local newspapers Jornal da Praça and Mercosul News, on February 13 in Brazil, and asks authorities to thoroughly and promptly investigate the circumstances surrounding his death. Cardoso was shot five times by two individuals on a motorcycle, in Ponta Porá, Mato Grosso do Sul.  Cardoso covered local corruption issues in his work and was openly critical of the current mayor, Flavio Kayatt.

Cardoso is the second journalist killed in Brazil this week who was attempting to highlight corruption -- Mario Lopes was killed on February 9. Since 2011, there has been an uptick in violence against journalists in the country, with six journalists murdered.
