Kerry Cites Ethiopia’s Arrests of Journalists

Washington

Freedom House welcomes Secretary of State John Kerry’s public statement on Ethiopia’s unwarranted arrest last week of nine Ethiopian bloggers and journalists, who remain in custody:

“Stability and further socioeconomic development of Ethiopia is impossible without respect for human rights and democratic reforms. In line with this, Secretary of State Kerry’s call for Ethiopia to respect the work of civil society is an important, first step toward pressing Ethiopia to respect human rights and democratic reforms,” said Vukasin Petrovic, director of Africa programs at Freedom House. “The United States and other governments should encourage Ethiopia to drop its heavy-handed tactics against those who advocate for citizens involvement in political processes and important national policy issues.”

Freedom House reiterates its call for the release of six bloggers and three journalists arrested on April 25 and 26.

Ethiopia is rated Not Free in Freedom in the World 2014, Freedom of the Press 2014 and Freedom on the Net 2013.
