Letter to Members of the Chamber of Deputies of Mexico
México City, Mexico
April 25, 2013
Honorable Members of the Chamber of Deputies:
Both international and Mexican civil society organizations congratulate and welcome the passage of the proposed laws that will empower federal authorities to federalize crimes committed against journalists and the media.
The law, passed by a majority in the Chamber of Deputies, is an important step to address the high impunity rate on attacks against media and journalists. The approval also demonstrates Mexico’s commitment to strengthening freedom of expression in the country.
The legislation will now head to President Pena Nieto to be signed into law. We encourage the president to swiftly approve this piece of legislation. The needs of the penal reform process, a direct result of this legislation, are crucial as the Attorney General’s Office considers a restructuring aimed at strengthening specialized cases on attacks against journalists and the media.
