Mexico City, April 19th, 2013

Mr. Enrique Pena Nieto

President of Mexico

Article 19, a civil society organization dedicated to the defense and promotion of freedom of expression, received death threats aimed at its Mexico Director, Dario Ramirez, and his staff today.

The letter, written in vulgar, violent and intimidating language, makes direct references to the work of Article 19 in Mexico. This aggression highlights the climate of violence directed against the press and human rights defenders in Mexico.

We express our dismay and concern over this threat and request that your government immediately implement all available security measures, and ensure a thorough investigation into this act of intimidation.

Freedom House is an independent watchdog organization that supports democratic change, monitors the status of freedom around the world, and advocates for democracy and human rights. In its 2012 Freedom of the Press report, Mexico is ranked not free due to the climate of harassment and aggression against journalists and communicators.

Attentively,

David Kramer

President, Freedom House

CC: Jesus Murillo Karam, Attorney General
