Montenegro Journalists Remain Target of Violent Attacks

Freedom House condemns an attack on the writer Jevrem Brković, a columnist for the daily newspaper Vijesti, and calls for authorities in Montenegro to investigate the long series of unsolved cases of physical harassment against journalists there.

In the latest incident, an explosive device was detonated by unknown persons outside of Brković’s apartment the night of January 13, marking this the third attack against members of the media in the past several weeks.

Brković, whose past writings and books have explored links between Montenegrin politicians and organized crime, was the target of a brutal assault with metal rods in 2006 that left his driver dead. No arrests were made in connection with the attack.

Freedom House urges police and judicial authorities to fully investigate the attacks, and to offer enhanced security protection to media outlets and their staff.
