Mourning Egypt's Bassem Sabry

Washington

Freedom House mourns the death of influential Egyptian blogger Bassem Sabry, who died after falling from a balcony in unexplained circumstances in Cairo on April 29.  Sabry was an important voice for political freedoms in Egypt.

"Bassem Sabry's voice will be deeply missed in the struggle for democracy and human rights in Egypt," said Charles Dunne, director of Middle East and North Africa programs at Freedom House. "A former member of parliament, Amr Hamzawy, put it well: 'I want a country in which every human feels that he has a chance of a decent life, the dream which my friend Bassem Sabry wrote for. I mourn him, a wonderful human and an Egyptian voice for freedom.' Freedom House hopes for a better future in Egypt, in which all Egyptians will enjoy full political freedoms and fundamental civic and political liberties."

Egypt is rated Not Free in Freedom in the World 2014, Not Free in Freedom of the Press 2013 and Partly Free in Freedom on the Net 2013.
