Mozambique: Opposition Leader Threatens Takeover

In response to the leader of the the opposition political party RENAMO threatening to seize power in disputed provinces of Mozambique Freedom House issued the following statement:

“Freedom House is concerned about the escalating tension between the governing FRELIMO party and the opposition RENAMO party, fueled by the attempted assassination of RENAMO Secretary-General Manuel Bissopo and threats by party leader Afonso Dhlakama to seize power,”said Vukasin Petrovic, director for Africa programs. “As violence continues to force citizens to flee to Malawi and the SADC region for safety, we call for restraint by all parties."

Renewed fighting and conflict between FRELIMO and RENAMO has led to over 3,000 refugees fleeing Mozambique, with the number expected to grow following Dhlakama’s declaration.

Mozambique is rated Partly Free in Freedom in the World 2016, and Partly Free in Freedom of the Press 2015
