New Russia Sanctions a Welcome Step by U.S.

Washington

In response to President Barack Obama’s announcement that the U.S. has placed additional sanctions against Russia, Freedom House issued the following statement:

“We welcome this step by the Obama administration as it ratchets up sanctions against Russian officials and businessmen, as well as Bank Rossiya,” said David J. Kramer, president of Freedom House.  “Today’s action should send a strong signal to Mr. Putin and his circle that there are costs to their egregious actions in Ukraine. As the U.S. government takes these measures, it needs to take account of the full spectrum of individuals (including Alexander Bortnikov, head of Russia’s security services (FSB); Sergei Shoigu, the minister of defense; Igor Sechin, head of Rosneft; Alexei Miller, head of Gazprom; Vagit Alekperov, head of Lukoil; and Sergei Chemezov, chair of defense exporter Rosoboronexport), state-owned enterprises and additional Russian banks that enable, sustain and bankroll President Putin’s imperial aspirations at the expense of independent states. Further Russian aggression must be stopped through comprehensive, hard-hitting measures.”
