Obama Should Ensure Civil Society Has Key Role at Africa Leaders’ Summit

Washington

Freedom House and a  broad coalition of  African and international NGOs urge President Barack Obama to give civil society a prominent role in the U.S. Africa Leaders’ Summit to be held August 5-6 in Washington, D.C. The summit is an opportunity for the United States to engage African leaders on the development of strong democratic institutions and respect for the rights of citizens.

“President Obama has acknowledged that civil society is an important partner in Africa’s development,” said David J. Kramer, president of Freedom House. “The participation of African civil society is crucial if the United States and African leaders are to promote strong democratic societies and sustained economic growth to benefit all Africans, not just elites.”
