Panelists Call for Mounting Pressure on Russia's Illusory Democracy
June 29, 2012
Russia's oppressive regime can no longer be ignored or accommodated, according to a distinguished panel of experts hosted by Freedom House and the Foreign Policy Initiative on June 27 and moderated by Freedom House President David Kramer. Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD), sponsor of the Sergei Magnitsky Rule of Law Accountability Act, said his bill is needed to put pressure on Russia’s human rights violators. Former Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov criticized Vladimir Putin’s regime for only projecting the “illusion of democracy” while subverting elections, and Kristiina Ojuland, Member of the European Parliament, noted that Europe is considering sanctions and a parallel Magnitsky Act. The U.S. is ‘too weak’ on Russia’s anti-democratic behavior and rights violations, said Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), who strongly supports the bill.
