Petition: Join Our Call to Release Political Prisoners in Belarus
This is a week of painful anniversaries for political prisoners in Belarus. Please join Freedom House in our advocacy efforts by signing our online petition: Immediately and unconditionally release of all political prisoners in Belarus!
- On May 26, four years will have passed since former presidential candidate Mikalai Statkevich was sentenced to six years in prison on trumped-up charges of organizing mass riots.
- Political prisoners Ihar Alinevic and Mikalai Dziadok were both sentenced to 8 and 4.5 years, respectively, in a penal colony on May 27, 2011.
- Yury Rubtsou, currently serving a 1.5 year prison term for wearing a shirt reading "Lukashenka, go away!" is set to stand trial once again on May 27 for supposedly violating the terms of his detention.
Each of these prisoners is a personal victim of president Aliaksandr Lukashenka, whose authoritarian regime has presided over Belarus for more than twenty years. Together with the Belarusian Viasna Human Rights Center and the Swiss-German Libereco Partnership for Human Rights, Freedom House is calling on Mr. Lukashenka to guarantee the human rights to freedom of expression, assembly, and association to all people in Belarus and to release all political prisoners in Belarus immediately and unconditionally.
