Police Raid on Zambian Radio Station Highlights Escalating Threat to Free Expression

Washington

In recent days, police and suspected supporters of the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) stormed Zambian community radio station Isoka FM and detained three journalists and staff members, after the station hosted a prominent opposition politician. In response to the incident, Freedom House issued the following statement:

“This is one of the most serious in a long list of incidents of government-sponsored extrajudicial attacks, harassment, and the use of legal cases to intimidate journalists and media outlets in retribution for airing or reporting on the viewpoints of opposition parties,” said Jenai Cox, program manager for Sub-Saharan Africa at Freedom House. “Such incidents only serve to create a chilling effect on free expression and the exchange of ideas in Zambia, at a time when open debate on issues such as the constitution-making process and the health of the economy are critically important.”

Zambia is rated Partly Free in Freedom in the World 2014, and declined from Partly Free to Not Free in Freedom of the Press 2014.
