President of Burkina Faso Seeks to End Presidential Term Limit

Washington

In response to the government of Burkina Faso asking parliament to authorize a national referendum ending term limits for the country’s president, Freedom House issued the following statement:

“Freedom House urges the National Assembly of Burkina Faso to respect the constitutional term limits in place,” said Vukasin Petrovic, director for Africa programs. “In light of the upcoming 2015 elections, the move –which would allow President Compaore, in office since 1991, to run for a third term– would heighten political tensions and civil discontent.”

Burkina Faso is rated Partly Free in the Freedom in the World 2014  and Freedom of the Press 2014  reports.
