Prime Minister of Mali Praises Freedom House, Partners' Work on Transitional Justice
September 22, 2014
Freedom House, ABA-ROLI, and the Human Rights Defenders Network were received by Prime Minister of Mali Moussa Mara on September 12, 2014, when they presented a Freedom House-sponsored report on atrocities suffered by many in Mali during 2002-2011 and pressed for adoption of a law to protect human rights defenders. The report, detailing hundreds of cases of human rights violations, was written following the Network’s broad-based documentation efforts across Mali in 2014.
Prime Minister Mara promised that the report would help the government take victims’ concerns into account during upcoming negotiations between the government and armed groups. He also committed to providing the text of the draft law to the Minister of Justice and Human Rights.
Freedom House is an independent watchdog organization that supports democratic change, monitors the status of freedom around the world, and advocates for democracy and human rights.
