Russia Acts to Silence Civil Society

Washington

In response to Russia registering five non-governmental organizations as “foreign agents”—the Golos Association for Voters' Rights, the Golos Public Organization for the Protection of Democratic Rights and Freedoms, the Center for Social Policy and Gender Studies, the Kostroma Center for Civic Initiatives, and the Union of Women of Don regional organization – Freedom House issued the followed statement.

"The Russian government no longer even pretends to consider democratic institutions part of society,” said David J. Kramer, president of Freedom House.  "By forcefully registering five civil society organizations as ‘foreign agents,’ the Kremlin shows that its objective is to silence civic groups advancing fundamental rights and freedoms. Freedom House urges the European Court of Human to give priority to the complaint lodged by Russian NGOs and alleging that the 'foreign agent' law violates the European Convention."

Russia is rated Not Free in Freedom in the World 2014 and Freedom of the Press 2014, and Partly Free in Freedom on the Net 2013.
