Russia Undermines Civil Society, Expands NGO 'Foreign Agents' List

Washington

In response to the Russian Ministry of Justice adding five prominent Russian NGOs to its list of “foreign agents,” Freedom House issued the following statement:

“By claiming five prominent NGOs are ‘foreign agents,’ Russian authorities are deliberately and ruthlessly attacking civil society organizations that protect the fundamental rights and freedoms of Russian citizens,” said David J. Kramer, president of Freedom House. “Adding five prominent groups – the Agora Association, EcoDefense Women’s Council, Public Verdict, Memorial Human Rights Center, and Lawyers for Constitutional Rights and Freedoms – to the ‘foreign agent’ list shows the perverse determination of Vladimir Putin to marginalize independent voices in Russia that question the government’s effectiveness and accountability.”

Russia is rated Not Free in Freedom in the World 2014 and Freedom of the Press 2014, and Partly Free in Freedom on the Net 2013.
