Sudan Sentences Pregnant Woman to Death for Religious Beliefs

Washington

In reaction to a Sudanese court on May 11 sentencing 27-year-old Meriam Yahia Ibrahim to lashings and death for the crimes of adultery and apostasy, Freedom House issued the following statement:

"Sudanese authorities should release Meriam Yahia Ibrahim from custody and review a court’s indefensible decision to sentence her to death for the alleged crimes of adultery and apostasy,” said Vukasin Petrovic, head of Africa programs at Freedom House. “Her only real crimes are her religious beliefs.  The court’s verdict highlights the conflict between Sudanese law and the country’s diverse population and international commitments, including guarantees of equality of all before the law.”

"The Sudanese government’s inhumane incarceration and now barbaric sentencing of 100 lashings and execution of Meriam Ibrahim is so outrageous that it’s nearly incomprehensible to all freedom-loving persons," said Chloe Schwenke, vice president for global programs at Freedom House. “This direct contravention of Articles 5 and 18 – freedom against cruel and unusual punishment, and freedom of religion – of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights demands a strong and immediate response."

Sudan is rated Not Free in Freedom in the World 2014, Freedom of the Press 2014, and Freedom on the Net 2013.
