Sudan Unlawfully Detains Darfuri Students

Washington

In response to the unlawful detention of female Dafuri students by Sudanese state security forces and reports of physical and sexual abuses, Freedom House issued the following statement:

“The Sudanese government should be held accountable for the abuses against these students, who have been unlawfully detained,” said Jenai Cox, program manager at Freedom House. “In addition to investigating actions by the officers involved, the government of Sudan should either formally charge the students in custody or release them immediately. The Sudanese government’s treatment of minorities reflects its utter disregard for the rights of its citizens, and its lack of commitment to core democratic principles.”

Sudan is rated Not Free in Freedom in the World 2014 report.
