Supporting Human Rights in Central Africa

As part of its ongoing effort to support human rights activists across Sub Saharan Africa in their struggle for the defense and promotion of human rights and basic freedoms, Freedom House sponsored and facilitated the first strategic meeting of the newly formed Central African Human Rights Defenders Network (REDHAC) in July 2010. Freedom House’s new regional partner, REDHAC consist of prominent human rights organizations from Cameroon, Chad, Central African Republic, Congo, Gabon, DRC, Equatorial Guinea and Sao Tome and Principe. The network’s mandate is to protect, defend, and build the capacity of regional Human Rights Defenders (HRDs).

Freedom House assisted REDHAC to develop their organizational structure, adopt statutes and operating procedures, define member roles and responsibilities, and draft initial work plans. Freedom House also conducted a training for HRDs which focused on: how to define an HRD, how to conduct an HRD assessment using Freedom House’s HRD Assessment Mission Guide, and best practices in network communication. Participating in full event were prominent human rights activists from seven of the eight REDHAC member countries.
