Swaziland Orders Unions to Close

Washington

In response to Swaziland's Minister of Labor and Social Security ordering that all worker and employer unions immediately stop operations, Freedom House issued the following statement:

“The government of Swaziland’s decision to ban labor unions demonstrates its disregard for the fundamental rights of association and assembly,” said Vukasin Petrovic, director for Africa programs at Freedom House. “The government’s failure to ensure the protection of workers’ groups has already led to Swaziland losing eligibility under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). Freedom House urges the government of Swaziland to withdraw the ban and respect the fundamental freedoms of its citizens.”

Swaziland is rated Not Free in Freedom in the World 2014 and Freedom of the Press 2013.
