Television Reporter Killed in Honduras
Freedom House condemns the brutal killing on April 23 of television reporter Noel Valladares and his two friends, Marcos Gutierrez and Adonis Escoto. We urge Honduran authorities to conduct a swift and thorough investigation into their deaths. Valladares and his two companions were shot to death, and his wife was wounded by four gunmen in Tegucigalpa near the studio of TV Maya, where Valladares hosted the morning show “Telecote.”
Freedom House is deeply concerned with the uptick in violence against journalists in Honduras. In the last three years, 18 journalists have been killed in Honduras, which has the world's highest murder rate.
“These deaths are emblematic of a wider problem in Honduras, which is the state’s failure to adequately protect journalists from violence” said Viviana Giacaman, Director for Latin America Programs at Freedom House. “We urge the Honduran government to investigate the deaths thoroughly and to bring the perpetrators to justice.”
Honduras is ranked Partly Free in the Freedom in the World 2012, Freedom House's survey of political rights and civil liberties, and Partly Free in Freedom of the Press 2011.
