UN Council Highlights LGBTI Rights

Washington

In response to the UN Human Rights Council today passing a resolution that expressed concern about discrimination and violence against individuals on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, Freedom House released the following statement:

“The passage of this resolution is a victory because it keeps the rights of sexual minorities on the UN human rights agenda—a tremendous feat given the magnitude of its opposition—however, there remains much to be done to strengthen international norms that support the full realization of human rights for LGBTI people,” said Mary McGuire, senior program manager for global advocacy. “Freedom House commends Colombia, Uruguay, Chile and Brazil for leading this charge and urges the UN community to make this just the first step in recognizing universal rights for all, regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity.”
